Pulitzer Prize

Joseph Pulitzer, publisher of the New York Globe, established the Pulitzer Prize through an endowment to Columbia University. The Prize has been awarded since 1917.

Man Booker Prize

The Man Booker Prize was initiated in 1969 and is administered by the National Book League in the United Kingdom. It is the premier British award for fiction written in English by a citizen of the United Kingdom, the British Commonwealth, Eire, Pakistan, or South Africa.

National Book Award

The National Book Award is awarded annually by the National Book Foundation for the best fiction in the United States.

National Book Critics Circle Award

The National Book Critics Circle Award is presented every year by the National Book Critics Circle to those books deemed the finest published in English. The National Book Critics Circle, founded in 1974, consists of nearly 700 active book reviewers, interested in communicating with one another about common concerns.

PEN / Faulkner Award

Named for William Faulkner, who used his Nobel Prize funds to create an award for young writers, and affiliated with PEN (Poets, Playwrights, Editors, Essayists and Novelists), the international writers' organization, the PEN/Faulkner Award was founded by writers in 1980 to honor their peers, and is now the largest juried award for fiction in the United States.

Spur Award

The Spur Award is given annually for distinguished writing about the American West by the Western Writers of America. It is among the oldest and most prestigious in American literature.

Newbery Medal

"The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children."

Caldecott Medal

"The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children."

Coretta Scott King Author and Illustrator Award

The purpose of the Coretta Scott King Book Awards (Author Award and Illustrator Award) is "to encourage the artistic expression of the African American experience via literature and the graphic arts, including biographical, historical and social history treatments by African American authors and illustrators."

Colorado Children's Book Award

"The Colorado Children's Book Award was established by Dr. Bill Curtis in 1975 to encourage children's active involvement with books and reading. The CCBA committee is sponsored by Colorado Council of the International Reading Association. The new nominations are Colorado children's choices."

Hugo Award for Science Fiction

"The Hugo Award" was named in honor of Hugo Gernsback, "The Father of Magazine Science Fiction," as he was described in a special award given to him in 1960. The Hugo Award, also known as the Science Fiction Achievement Award, is given annually by the World Science Fiction Society (WSFS). The distinguishing characteristics of the Hugo Award are that it is sponsored by WSFS, administered by the committee of the World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) held that year, and determined by nominations from and a popular vote of the membership of WSFS."

Nebula Award

The Nebula Award is given each year by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA), for the best science fiction/fantasy fiction published in the United States during the two previous years. The Nebula is awarded in five different categories: novel, novella, novelette, short story, and script.

Edgar Allan Poe Awards

The Edgar Allan Poe Awards, popularly called the Edgars, are named after Edgar Allan Poe and are presented every year by the Mystery Writers of America. They honor the best in mystery fiction, non-fiction, television, film and theater, published or produced in the past year.

Agatha Award

Agatha Awards are given for materials in five categories: 1) Traditional Mystery--books best typified by the works of Agatha Christie; 2) Best First Novel; 3) Best Short Story; 4) Best Non-Fiction 5) Best Children's/Young Adult.

Bram Stoker Awards

"Each year, the Horror Writer's Association presents the Bram Stoker Awards for Superior Achievement, named in honor of Bram Stoker, author of the seminal horror work, Dracula...The awards are given in eight categories: Novel, First Novel, Short Fiction, Long Fiction, Fiction Collection, Poetry Collection, Anthology, and Nonfiction. In addition, Lifetime Achievement Stokers are occasionally presented to individuals whose entire body of work has substantially influenced Horror."
