Summer of Discovery Reading Challenge Starts June 1!

Summer of Discovery Boulder Public LibraryBoulder Public Library is gearing up for another inspiring Summer of Discovery reading challenge program themed “Our Connected World.”

What is Summer of Discovery?

From June 1 to July 31, 2024, the library invites Boulder families to join them on their goal to read 2,000,000 minutes. Last year’s program featured 3,618 participants who read a collective total of 2,152,278 minutes, and the library is hoping to dramatically increase those numbers for 2024.

Interested participants are encouraged to register online at, where they can download the Beanstack App, which tracks and monitors readers’ progress allowing for a diverse range of reading materials. Whether it’s audiobooks, magazines, or graphic novels, there’s something for everyone. Registration is currently open.

Prizes include books, passes to the Parks and Recreation facility, free ice cream at Cold Stone Creamery, and tickets to Gateway Park Fun Center. Summer of Discovery will recognize three grand prize winners for the first time this year! Prizes include:

  • An Apple iPad (for teens/adults),
  • A Nintendo Switch (for children),
  • A Toniebox (for pre-readers).

Special Events

Special in-person events will run throughout the Summer of Discovery program, starting with two kick-off events at the Meadows and Reynolds Library.

  • The Meadows Library event (4800 Baseline Road) will be held on June 1st from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and feature face painting, games, crafts, and snacks from around the world.
  • The Reynolds Library event (3595 Table Mesa Drive) will be held on June 1st from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and feature Camp Half-Blood, where attendees can use STEAM concepts to become demigods through activities inspired by Rick Riordan’s series, “Percy Jackson and The Olympians.” Children and teens are encouraged to dress in their best Percy Jackson attire. Face painting and a snow cone wheel will also be onsite.
  • Additionally, on Sunday, June 2nd at 1:00 p.m., the Main Library (1001 Arapahoe Ave) will host “KiKi’s Delivery Service” on the big screen in the Canyon Theater as part of a Studio Ghibli Summer. This family-friendly event will include themed activities, snacks, and movie-related crafts. Rated G, 1h42m. English dub with English subtitles.
  • As the reading program concludes, a special children’s concert will be held in the Canyon Theater on Wednesday, July 24th from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Main Library. Jeff and Paige use songs, storytelling, and interactive play to engage kids with nature, music, and movement. They use costumes and props to create characters and set the scene for an engaging and educational experience.

Gateway Park Fun Center, Cold Stone Creamery, and Dickey’s Barbecue Pit generously donated this year’s prizes for the Summer of Discovery reading challenge program.
