Hilda and the Bird Parade by Luke Pearson
“This is a fabulous graphic novel series that follows Hilda, her pet Twig, and their adventures in a Scandinavian landscape. In the first two books, Hilda and her mom were living in a small house in the fjords, where Hilda spent her time roaming and exploring the natural landscape and conversing with a variety of magical creatures. Here, in Book #3, Hilda’s mother has moved them both to the city. At first, Hilda is not happy. The view from her bedroom window doesn’t look promising, and her mother is too fearful to let her roam the streets. A group of kids from her new school show up and give her an excuse to get out, and once she is free to roam Hilda begins to discover that the city can have a magic all of its own. The artwork here is engaging and atmospheric, with the colors evoking Scandinavia and gradually shifting to transform the city from a mundane environment to a place where something as wonderful as a Bird Parade can take place.”
