Carnegie Library for Local History will re-open with a free open house event on Saturday, October 12 from 10 a.m. to noon. Attendees can enjoy hands-on activities, access the library’s collection, and chat with archivists while celebrating local history.

Housed in Boulder’s original library building built in 1906, Carnegie holds an extensive archive of Boulder area history including books, maps, diaries, historic photographs, oral history interviews, local property records, Boulder High School yearbooks, the collection of the Boulder Genealogical Society and the entire clipping files of the Boulder Daily Camera newspaper.

“It’s important for us to preserve this unique collection of Boulder history for the community,” said David Farnan, Boulder Public Library Director. “We’re excited to celebrate our re-opening and make this collection more accessible to the public.”

Starting the week of October 13, the library will be open:

Tuesdays: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. (by appointment)
Thursdays: 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. (by appointment) and 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. (open for walk-ins)
Saturdays: 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. (by appointment) and 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. (open for walk-ins)

Anyone is welcome to schedule an appointment to access the library during designated appointment-only times by visiting: calendar.boulderlibrary.org/appointments.

This re-opening aims to further the Carnegie Library for Local History’s mission of building and preserving a living archive of Boulder County that inspires the future through an understanding of the past by providing wider access to the library’s materials and services.

Carnegie will offer expanded programs following the re-opening, starting with a Research Rendezvous open house for teens and educators on Tuesday, December 3 from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. This event will focus on teaching students how to create their own primary sources by conducting interviews with people who have firsthand knowledge of a topic.
