I Shall Be Near to You by Erin Lindsay McCabe
“I enjoyed this story set during the Civil War. Rosetta, the protagonist, is an independent, willful young woman who becomes a new bride to her childhood friend and sweetheart, Jeremiah, before he goes off to war. The promise and dream of a family and farm is not enough to ease her longing for her husband. She cuts her hair, dresses in men’s clothing and joins the Union Army to find him. I appreciated how the story stayed true in its description of the conditions during wartime and the gender relations at the time. It explores new love, longing, deep grief and loss, and the promise of a new life. I recommend this story to anyone who enjoys reading historical fiction with female lead characters.”
