Himself by Jess Kidd
“Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day…..The setting is a small town in Ireland in the 1970s, and the main character, Mahony, is an orphan looking for clues to his past. All he has is a photo of himself as an infant with his mother. The back of the photo states that she was the scourge of the town. All of the characters–both the living townspeople and the ghostly inhabitants that only Mahony can see–are fabulously done. In particular, the antics of the ghosts made me laugh out loud. As Mahony draws close to solving the mystery of his mother’s disappearance, half of the town embraces him, while the other half grows afraid of him when they find out who he is. Read it if you gravitate toward charming settings, supernatural elements, raunchy humor, and quirky characters.”
