At the Mountains of Madness

I have always wanted to read, or more precisely, study and experience, what makes H.P. Lovecraft such a legend of the horror genre. “Cthulhu” was a word I had heard in passing but never really understood. With this little novella, At the Mountains of Madness, I can now say I am more fully educated. The blending of a 1930s scientific Antarctic expedition and horrors that we as humans cannot really conceive is brilliant and the first of its kind. The book is a mastery of description that conveys the mystery, dismay, awe, and yes, terror of what the characters witnessed. And then when I did not expect it, it ended with just one bone-chilling word…
