Maya Van Wagenen
Popular is a fun, gutsy memoir of an 8th grader who decides to follow the advice of a 1951 Teenage Popularity guide for an entire school year. Maya, a “geeky” teen who considers herself a social outcast at her school, follows the antiquated guide, from donning a strand of pearls, to wearing a girdle and gloves, hairstyles, and alternates sitting at every table in the cafeteria. Her experiences with crushes and fair-weather friends, and her desire to change the status quo were all too relatable. Maya is an excellent writer and very likable young lady. She’ll go far, and I can’t wait to see what she does next!
