The Sellout by Paul Beatty
“Paul Beatty is laugh out loud funny! But many of the things he makes you laugh at made me sad after I laughed. This book–the first by an American to win the prestigious Man Booker Prize–is a look at racial prejudice and race issues in the U.S. over the last 50 years(including the Little Rascals TV show). It was funny, disheartening, well-written and unique. The main characters are a well-read bus driver (who also has great musical taste) and his love interest; a black farmer/surfer/philosophical sage who was home-schooled by his sociologist father and also narrates; and Hominy Jenkins, the last living Little Rascal. You won’t think about Satsuma tangerines, the Little Rascals, segregation or slavery the same way again. Well-done, Paul Beatty!”
