Meet the Boulder Public Library District Board of Trustees

The seven all-volunteer members of the newly-formed Boulder Public Library District Board of Trustees have been hard at work since mid-May building the library district approved by Boulder City and County voters in 2022.

According to Joni Teter, President of the Board of Trustees, “We are all excited and honored to be doing this work. The library district’s steady and predictable funding will allow our library to meet community needs today and for future generations. We are working to create a transparent and accountable governance structure to support the ongoing success of library staff and volunteers.”

The Board of Trustees is meeting weekly to complete the tasks required to form the Boulder Public Library District.  These tasks include creation of governance infrastructure and negotiation of intergovernmental agreements with the City and County. The agreements must address the transfer of library assets and library employees to the new library district. All meetings are open to the public and the Board of Trustees looks forward to hearing input from the community.

In public meetings held in May and June, the busy Board of Trustees hired the Library Director, adopted bylaws and a handbook, received training on trustee responsibilities, reviewed the Boulder Public Library equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives, elected officers, adopted interim intergovernmental agreements with the city and county, and met with library staff at an all-staff meeting.

The Boulder City Council and Boulder County Commissioners selected trustees earlier this year from dozens of applicants.  The trustees boast extensive experience supporting our library, including members of the Boulder Library Commission, Library District Advisory Committee, Boulder Library Foundation Board, and Boulder Library Champions.  The trustees reside throughout the Library District, from the foothills of Boulder County, to Gunbarrel and across Boulder.  The trustees are: Joni Teter, Benita Duran, Sylvia Wirba, Jennifer Yee, Doug Hamilton, Cara O’Brien, and Sam Fuqua.

The Board of Trustees meets each Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. in the Canyon Meeting Room at the Main Library, 1001 Arapahoe Ave., Boulder, CO through July, and then at the Meadows Branch Library in early August.
