Library Master Plan

Boulder Public Library Master Plan

Summary

The Boulder Public Library is updating its master plan. Your ideas about the future of the library and your participation is essential to this process. Guiding the library programs and services for the next several years, the master plan goals are intended to reflect community aspirations and priorities, by putting library resources and staff skills in the service of the community.

Keep up to date on the master plan progress by signing up for our Library Newsletter or send us a note with your thoughts on our master plan contact form.

Status and Next Steps

This project commenced in January 2016. The phases are as follows:

Staff gathered research from several community planning documents and websites, and identified community priorities and needs. Library services directly impact the goals of the City of Boulder’s Sustainability Framework of creating: a livable community; accessible and connected community; economically vital community; and a healthy and socially thriving community. Benchmark analysis was also completed comparing key performance measures with local and national peer public libraries.

Your input is essential to developing the plan for future library services in our community. Below are some of the upcoming community engagement activities in this phase of the master plan update:

A financial analysis of the current facilities, programs and services and those proposed in previous phases will be completed. Performance measures and standards will be developed for the current programs and services that will be retained and for new ones that are deemed high priority.

Research findings, data analysis and community input will be summarized into a draft master plan document. An action plan with implementation strategies and timelines will be developed. The draft action plan and master plan will be vetted by relevant advisory boards and commissions, and by City Council. January 2018 through May 2018, the Library Commission will provide input to staff on draft sections of the Master Plan at its monthly meetings. See meeting schedule below. Library Commission meeting packets and minutes are posted online for community members to review. The Boulder Public Library Master Plan Update will be finalized and presented to City Council for adoption in July 2018.
